INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL EDUCATION
Bayelsa Medical University is a specialised medical university established to train professionally competent personnel in knowledge, skills and attitude in the multi-disciplinary study of medicine and allied medical sciences who are capable in managing the health needs and challenges of society and proffering solutions to such issues for the well-being of mankind.
Medical Education is defined as the study, research and application of educational methods and processes employed in the training of physicians and other healthcare professionals with a view to ensuring continuous quality and standards, thereby leading to knowledgeable, competent and proficient health professionals for the overall improvement in healthcare delivery and health of the people.
Historically health professionals are appointed to academic positions with limited knowledge of the principles and processes of medical education (curriculum design, teaching methods, examinations and assessments, teaching quality assurance etc), as well as very little knowledge to enhance quality teaching. As of today most medical teachers and lecturers in Nigerian universities lack knowledge in the areas of curriculum design and development, pedagogy and modern assessment techniques which are foundational platforms in training our medical workforce. Teachers have relied on their intuitive abilities to teach and examine without any formal training or at best copy or replicate what they saw their own teachers do.
In the establishment of the Bayelsa Medical University in 2018 one of the key priorities of the university is staff development in medical education hence the initial formation of a Centre for Medical Education which has been responsible for holding workshops on pedagogy, curriculum development and assessment techniques. But as part of expanding the medical education
The institute will be responsible;
- To develop practical, generic skills in teaching and assessment underpinned by an understanding of educational theory and encourage reflective learning.
- To develop sound academic skills applicable to the field of medical education research.
- To produce medical experts who are knowledgeable in curriculum design and development and can apply the same.
- To produce medical experts with sound training in pedagogy who have basic, advanced and applied teaching skills.
- To inculcate and improve the skills of medical experts in modern assessment techniques for valid examination outcomes.
The Institute of Medical Education will be dedicated to promoting excellence and leadership in medical education through high quality postgraduate programs, research and innovation and clinical skill acquisition leading to the provision of quality healthcare. The strategic focus is to produce medical professionals that are capable of being employed in careers in the diverse fields of medical science in any part of the world. We will be offering our students and trainees high quality teaching and learning experiences that are ICT-based and designed
